A few months ago, I visited the Henry Gurney school to attend the SPM results handover ceremony. It was quite touching. Many of the kids were from broken homes and some could not even read or write – yet some managed to get 5A’s. Many were there for stealing, drug offenses and some violent crimes. I asked a few of them if they knew then what they did was wrong. Back then they never thought of others, only what they want. They never thought of the consequences of their action. Now, all they want to do is rebuild their lives and continue to college.
Those were the ‘lucky’ ones. A few months after that, I met a senior education ministry official who used to teach young inmates in prison. He told me about the boy who had murdered his tuition teacher’s daughter (a girl younger than him). Society and public opinion was asking for the death sentence or to lock him away forever. Many questioned how he could be heartless to stab a young girl so many times with a scissor.
The teacher after spending months with the boy teaching one to one in a cell, got to know him very well. The boy slowly revealed what had happened. The girl had called him names and taunted him for being fat. She pointed to the scissors and dared him to stab her. The boy couldn’t take it anymore and he did. It was one moment of bullying that will change everyone’s life.
The teacher who looks like a very stern drill sergeant started crying when he told me the next part of the story. One day, the guard had left the room and the teacher had remembered he had a sweet in his pocket. He had taken it out to eat when he saw the boy’s face light up when he saw it. He offered it to the boy knowing he had not eaten one in years. The boy thanked the teacher. After that, the teacher came out of the prison and sat in car and cried for a long time. He kept Imagining his own child in that situation.
The teacher told me he has never told anyone this story before and until this day, he still gets emotional when he thinks of the boy.
When we are young, we don’t think of the consequences of our actions, only what we want or who has wronged us. No amount of regret or how much an angel we turn out to be will change the effect our action has.
Likewise, as adults many forget this and don’t think about the consequences of our actions and words. We want to hurt the other person who has hurt us. In one moment of anger, a lifetime of regret.
